In order to maintain relevance and marketability in the acting industry, my agency requires me to update my headshots every one to two years. While they often use the photos I provide for print and commercial submissions, I have come to learn that actor headshots for different mediums can vary greatly. What works for one industry may not work for another, and can even hinder your chances of being booked.
First things first- What is a Headshot?
The headshots that didn't help me get booked:
Photographer selection: Initially, I refused to use the photographers recommended by my agency, as I found them to be too expensive and located too far away. Instead, I searched for photographers on Instagram who I "thought" would meet the standards of my agency. This was a mistake. It is important to use photographers who are experienced in shooting actor headshots and who understand the specific requirements of the industry.
Makeup: I also made the mistake of booking a makeup artist who was not familiar with the natural look required for actor headshots. While the makeup she applied was beautiful, it was not appropriate for the industry. It is important to choose a makeup artist who has experience working with actors and who understands the importance of a natural look.
Shooting location: The photographer I chose suggested that we shoot outdoors at a park in November. This was a mistake, as the cold weather made it difficult for me to relax and focus on the shoot. It is important to choose a shooting location that is comfortable and that will allow you to project the desired look and feel.
The outcome:
After receiving the photos from the shoot, I sent them to my agent. She was not happy with them and advised me to find someone else. I did not have the money for retakes at the time, so I was forced to use the photos I had. As a result, I did not book any auditions or jobs while those photos were uploaded to my profiles.
The moral of the story:
It is important to listen to your agency and agent when it comes to headshots. They know what casting directors are looking for and can provide you with recommendations for photographers and makeup artists who are experienced in working with actors. While it may be tempting to save money by using cheaper or less experienced professionals, it is important to remember that your headshots are a vital marketing tool. Investing in quality headshots is an investment in your career.
